The Talk Test The Talk Test is a simple (no formulas involved!) measure of intensity that anyone can use with their chosen aerobic activity.  The premise is that during your aerobic activity, you should be able to carry on a normal conversation.  If your breathing is labored and makes it difficult to speak normally, more than likely you are near the upper end of your THR and should ease back on your intensity.  If, on the other hand, you are able to belt out some show tunes during your aerobic session, then you are probably not performing at a high enough intensity to see much of a benefit.  While this method may be somewhat conservative to highly trained and conditioned individuals, for most people it provides a simple, reliable way to ensure they are exercising at intensity appropriate for them.
